The Central Public Library of Rhodes was founded in September 1947 by the Commander of the Dodecanese at that time. The Library has been housed in the “Castellania” building, which is located near Ippokratous Square and is considered one of the most important monuments in the Medieval Town of Rhodes built by knights and bearing elements of the Renaissance Style. The “Castellania” building had most likely been built in 1507, definitely after the big earthquake in 1481. Initially, this building used to host the knights’ administrative services under the supervision of a member of the Castellano Order of Knights or the regional court. During the Turkish domination, it had been converted into a Muslim house of prayer called Bazesten mosque, while all the surrounding area was swarming with wooden sheds selling fish and with the noted Ottoman indolence and muck. On 17th July 1924 a fire broke out in a well-known bar. The fire spread very quickly and despite the “coordinated” measures of the Italian authorities resulted in the entire destruction of the biggest part of the market. More than 60 shops were destroyed and there were also two casualties. Following that and a series of coordinated actions (expropriations, erections, and other interventions), the Italians built the commercial centre of the Medieval Town of Rhodes in the same form as that is preserved until today. The construction works on the “Castellania” building had lasted for 10 years (1925-1935) and the architect in charge was an Italian, Florestano di Fausto. From that point and until the liberation of Rhodes, the building was being utilized by the Italian education company “Dante Alighieri” as a learning centre for the Italian language. It also served propagandistic purposes, since the Italians used to place exaggerated emphasis on the period of the domination of the Knights. What is more, they tried to characterise this period as a period of Italian domination and, consequently, claim historic titles and rights. Since 1947 and after the incorporation of the Dodecanese into the Greek State, the Public Library of Rhodes and the Historical Archive of the Dodecanese have been housed on the ground floor of the “Castellania” building. In 1989 a programmatic convention was signed between the Greek Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, under the jurisdiction of which the Library comes, and the Medieval City Office of the Municipality of Rhodes. According to this convention, extensive interventions and preservation and refurbishment works were carried out on the building in order to create a new reading room in the atrium of the “Castellania” building. These works were completed in 1994. The total cost of the works amounted to 30,000,000 drachmas and included mainly: the creation of a new reading room in the atrium after the erection of two groined-vaults that had been demolished during the II World War bombardments, glass enclosure, garden configuration, new electrical and hydraulic installations, sewerage, insulations, painting of the building, frames and furniture, etc. The “Castellania” building has now become presentable, modern, but at the same time traditional and completely functional so as to house library services. During the following years, we have tried to broaden the Library’s scope and range of actions, to attract the public, to bring forth the history and literary and cultural tradition of our place of origin; and the “Castellania” building has been the cornerstone of these attempts. In particular: We have published books, many of which are dedicated to our region and its intellectual creators. We have organised various exhibitions in our renovated premises. We have acquired a mobile library, whose action comes under the Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training (EPEAEK). We have created a web page, which receives thousands of visits. We have established a Public Information Centre providing our readers with free Internet access. We have digitalized the biggest part of our local newspaper archive. Based on all the above, nowadays the Library looks optimistically to the future and is in a position to provide not only the residents of our city, but also the greater public with modern services.
