It has been estimated that public libraries in the United States serve less than 50% of adults. Adults are important members of society because they make decisions about the level of financial and political support public libraries receive, either directly by voting on how much financial support they will receive or by electing people who are responsible for making that determination. The challenge for the public library professional has been to create programs and activities that engage, promote and stimulate greater use of the public library by adults. However, these programs are not just designed for political gain. They are often developed to help emphasize the role of the public library as an important cultural and educational institution in the community. The philosophy and examples of adult programming in U.S. public libraries will be discussed.
